Common Signs You Have a Nutrient Deficiency

Most people know we need a certain amount of vitamins and minerals daily to stay healthy, but not all prioritize this as we should. It’s easy to fall victim to the convenience of fast food, forget or skip meals, or not take the supplements our body needs depending on our various underlying health conditions. When we neglect to get in all our necessary vitamins and minerals, our bodies can begin to fail over time.

Here are a few common signs that you have a nutrient deficiency and must act immediately!

Major Hair Loss

Hair loss can occur for various reasons, but if you are losing clumps of hair in the shower or waking up with excess hair on your pillow every day, you should first check if you are suffering from a nutrient deficiency. Your primary care doctor will take some blood samples and check for low levels of iron, biotin, B7, issues with your thyroid, etc., to determine if the hair loss is nutrient deficiency related.

Bleeding Gums

Sometimes bleeding gums can be caused by brushing your teeth too roughly, but a diet lacking vitamin C could also be the reason. If you are diligent and perform a full oral cleaning daily and still suffer from red, swollen gums, you may need to boost your vitamin C intake. This powerful and necessary anti-inflammatory vitamin pulls cells together to help wounds heal quickly.

Consuming very little vitamin C in your diet for long periods can bring on symptoms of deficiency, including bleeding gums, tooth loss, or even scurvy, which depresses the immune system, weakens muscles and bones, and makes people feel tired and lethargic.

Bone Pain

If you are severely deficient in vitamin D, you may experience fatigue, bone pain, mood changes, muscle aches, or weakness. Vitamin D deficiency can soften bones; long-lasting deficiency can be linked to cancers and autoimmune diseases.

You can get your daily dose of vitamin D by going into the sun for at least 10 minutes daily or by eating food like salmon, herring, canned tuna, shrimp, mushrooms, soy milk, oatmeal, or orange juice. For severe deficiencies, your doctor may prescribe you a vitamin D supplement.
