Essential Vitamins You Need to Stay Healthy This Winter

Essential Vitamins You Need to Stay Healthy This Winter

Winter can be a challenging time for many, both mentally and physically. Longer nights and shorter days mixed with frigid temperatures and zero motivation to get things done is a recipe for disaster. Prioritizing your health and wellness during the winter season is extremely important to set yourself up for a successful year.

Here are a few essential vitamins you need to stay healthy this winter!

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” is a popular vitamin to supplement in the wintertime since there is a lack of daylight. Vitamin D assists with calcium absorption, boosts immune system function, bone development, and healthy cell growth, reduces inflammation, and activates brain areas critical for biorhythms and proper neuromuscular function.

The recommended daily amount of vitamin D for adults between the ages of 19 and 70 is 600 IU. Older people should consume at least 1000 IU of vitamin D per day to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.

B Vitamins

B vitamins help improve your mood and decrease depression and stress, but they are also a cofactor for proper digestion and a healthy gut. They are needed for the body to make neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

If you take Vitamin B7, also known as biotin, you should stop taking it for at least seven days before any blood work you may do, as it interferes with lab results.

The recommended daily amount differs for each person, so check with your physician or pharmacist before supplementing with it!

Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral that helps your immune system fight off viruses and bacteria, which is incredibly important during the winter cold and flu season. It helps prevent viruses from adhering to cell walls in the nasal passage and is involved in antibody production, an important immune system process.

Most people will get enough zinc by eating a balanced diet, but people on some medications, the elderly, people with gut conditions, and pregnant and breastfeeding women may need more. Most men need 14 milligrams (mg) of zinc daily, and most women need 8mg.
